Lindum Packaging has been hailed for its innovation in reducing emissions, as it receives the Net Zero Award at the University of Hull’s Innovate North ceremony.
As the UK’s leading expert on pallet stability, Lindum Packaging understands the challenges companies face when transporting goods and has been instrumental in its efforts to help reduce carbon emissions associated with pallet transport.
To help companies identify areas for improvement, the company created a unique, dedicated Mobile Pallet Stability Test Lab. The first of its kind, the mobile lab can test and analyse the stability of pallets to identify areas for improvement, including over-packaging to reduce waste and movement in transport.
Replicating a company’s packing process and simulating the stresses that a loaded pallet is subject to during transport, the Mobile Test Lab records real-time feedback so adjustments can be made to ensure pallets are securely packaged for cost-effective and sustainable logistics.
Within six months, the company had managed to reduce plastic usage by up to 69% and saved 320 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, which is equivalent to removing 65 combustion vehicles off the road for one year.
Rick Sellars, sales manager at Lindum Packaging, said: “We are thrilled to have won the award in the Net Zero category. Carbon emissions associated with transportation are an ongoing issue for many companies, and we are striving to make a difference where possible to make the whole process more sustainable and efficient.
“With the Mobile Pallet Stability Test Lab and our new dedicated Innovation Centre, we have the unique ability to analyse the overall stability of pallets to reduce over-packaging and improve performance.
“From there, we can advise our clients on the exact measures that can be implemented to ensure products are transported effectively from the factory to the end user in the best condition with no product or packing material wastage.
“We go beyond highlighting initial transportation issues and diagnose the root cause. This helps us to suggest an alternative solution to prevent goods getting damaged during transit, lower emissions, and reduce financial loss.”
The Innovate North Awards took place on 9th May. This was the first-ever ceremony to celebrate and recognise businesses from across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire that have excelled in innovation, growth, talent, and progress toward reducing carbon emissions.
The event was in partnership with the University’s innovation partners, SparkFund, Humber Internships Programme, Flood Innovation Centre, and Aura Innovation Centre and businesses were awarded in areas including Innovation, Growth, Talent, and Net Zero.
Alan Raw, Judge and BBC Eco Time presenter on BBC Radio Humberside, said: “Lindum Packaging’s Mobile Test Lab, and their ability to collate rich data, has created an incredible solution, allowing brands to very quickly reduce their use of plastics and CO2 emissions.”
Headquartered in Grimsby, Lindum Packaging is the UK’s leading expert on pallet stability and stretch film wrap. The company provides packaging products, as well as a wide range of pallet stability testing and consultancy to help its customers improve pallet transportation for a greener future.
