UFlex Chemicals business developed two component solvent free polyurethane adhesive (FLEXBON 146C) with curing agent (FLEXBON 146A) from renewable source for flexible packaging:
The increasing concern over environmental pollution has forced the industry to develop environmentally friendly adhesive. This project gives the idea about use of raw materials from renewable sources to synthesis polyurethane adhesive which is important from social, environmental and economic view as compared to those produced form petrochemical sources. The preparation of resins from natural renewable raw materials is todays need in order to reduce the dependency on petroleum-based material and provide a sustainable and green solution to the industries. And its reduces the emission of the Carbon di oxide in the produced from the petro based technology. Polyurethane adhesive are traditionally produced by reacting petroleum- based polyols with diisocyanates.
Currently, the majority of adhesives and coatings marketed are based on petroleum derived components. The use of petrochemicals such as polyester or polyether polyols is disadvantageous for a variety of reasons. Because petrochemicals are ultimately derived from petroleum, the production of a polyol requires a great deal of energy, as oil must be drilled, refined, and processed to make the polyols. Moreover, petro chemical based polyols are subject to price fluctuations and availabilities of petroleum and natural gas. As the public becomes more aware of environmental issues, there are distinct marketing disadvantages in using petrochemical based products. With the continuously growing demand for 'greener and sustainable products from consumers, there is a motivation to replace polyester or polyether polyols, as used in the production of polyurethane adhesives, with a more versatile, renew able raw material like castor oil, Soya oil and linseed oils.
Thinking toward the sustainable sourcing and using the renewable bio-based material. Uflex limited has developed two component solvent free polyurethane adhesive (FLEXBON 146 C & FLEXBON 146A) from renewable source castor oil for flexible packaging. Castor oil based polyurethane adhesive from renewable sources since they can be produced at low prices and can be biodegradable, as compared to those produced from petrochemical sources. By use of this method biodegradable castor oil based polyurethane adhesive made.
New two-component polyurethane adhesive solvent free (FLEXBON 146C) was prepared with 100% castor oil used as main ingredient and reacted with additives by transesterification & polycondensation polymerisation process. Having no By-product which generates with using petrochemical ingredient. Later, which has to be treated in effluent plant and having high COD and BOD. Curing component is also made using the castor oil and linseed oil and other additive along with diisocynate were prepared. Both the components are free from the Petro based ingredients.
Renewable resource based Polyurethane adhesive are technically and environmentally best for the foods packaging. It is designed for all printed and unprinted, metalized film laminating structure from general performance to high performance structures with high chemical and heat resistant properties. Leads to allow for fast curing. The equipment is easy to clean since adhesive is solvent free based on oil-based chemistry. As viscosities are low so lesser energy used during application, no carbon dioxide emission against the Petro based adhesive.
