Banding with bands up to a width of 30 mm is a proven alternative to conventional strapping of corrugated cardboard stacks with strapping bands. Now extra-strong paper bands are also becoming established for bundling and strapping heavy stacks.
Strapping stacks of corrugated board, cardboard or paper with wide bands and ultrasonic sealing technology from ATS offers proven advantages over strapping with conventional PP and PET bands: The up to 30 mm wide bands protect the surfaces and edges of corrugated and folding cartons, displays and other products. This minimizes waste and simplifies handling. This is a key competitive advantage that is especially important for high-value packaging (e.g., highly finished packaging for cosmetics or high-value toys, food, or consumer electronics). And unlike thermal processes, ultrasonic sealing transfers energy directly to the material being sealed, rather than transferring it in the form of thermal energy. Banding machines with ultrasonic sealing technology are ready to use with no warm-up time, generate no heat, and significantly reduce energy consumption.
Strong paper bands also on the rise for strapping corrugated board and cardboard stacks
Now that film strapping has long been established and proven for strapping stacks of corrugated board and cardboard, the demand for paper strapping is growing rapidly. In addition to the well-known advantages that paper strapping offers over conventional strapping, as mentioned above, paper banding also offers other benefits. In particular, there are environmental benefits: Paper is a sustainable resource made from renewable raw materials with closed and proven recycling loops. According to the latest report from the European Paper Recycling Council (EPRC), 70.5% of the paper and cardboard consumed and collected in Europe was recycled in 2022. This means that paper already outperforms any other material in terms of recycling. By comparison, the recycling rate for plastics in Europe is currently around 30%, depending on the source of information.
ATS-Tanner has an extra strong banding paper in its range that is particularly suitable for the corrugated board and cardboard industry
For applications where very tight and tear resistant strapping is required, two papers have proven to be particularly suitable: A 30 mm wide and 120 g/m2 kraft paper with a TruePaper coating (PBS12030TP) and a kraft paper, also 30 mm wide and 120 g/m2 thick, with a plastic coating (PBS12030PP). Both papers are extremely tear resistant and in combination with ATS' ultrasonic sealing technology provide an extremely strong seal and therefore high tensile strength. Bundling stacks weighing up to 15 kg is no problem with either paper. The paper with the TruePaper coating, exclusively available from ATS, can be assigned the recycling code PAP 22 and can be recycled in the normal paper cycle.
Leading machine manufacturers are integrating ATS banding technology at the end of the packaging line
Examples of machines available with ATS ultrasonic banding technology include BOBST's automatic packaging machine SPEEDPACK, BAHMÜLLER's POWERPACKER, and MOSCA's corrugated strapping machine UCB. They can all be ordered with optional integrated banding machines from ATS instead of conventional strapping machines. ATS-Tanner Banding Systems offers the US-2000 AST-MDM stand-alone banding machine and the US-2000 TRC-900 fully automatic banding machine with jumbo dispenser. Both machines have a 900 x 500 mm arch and process 30 mm wide paper or film bands.
