Product: Innovative oxygen barrier coating agent for mono-material packaging
Nowadays, consumption of flexible packaging is on the upsurge due to convenience, lightweight, and the ability to customize. Yet, today's flexible packaging is difficult to recycle since it consists of various materials, including foil, plastic, and paper, to achieve target performance such as aesthetic look, product protection, and transportation. To enable recyclability, turning multi-material packaging into mono-material packaging while the key target performance still persists is important. However, it causes several challenges such as a narrow sealing operation window and poor oxygen barrier property.
To secure oxygen barrier for mono-material packaging, SCG Chemicals, the world's leading plastic producer company in the Circular Economy ranked by BloombergNEF 2022, launches an oxygen barrier coating agent called "BWO1501G" as ASIA's 1st Recyclable Barrier Coating Technology for PE flexible certified Recyclability by RecyClass. BWO1501G provides Oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of less than 1 cc/day/m2 and can be simply applied to various substrates without a primer by standard laminating equipment. With this, the coating enables the replacement of non-recyclable packaging made from Nylon, PET, PVDC, and MPET with recyclable PE, PP, and PO packaging structures.
Compliance with Food Safety packaging standard, BWO1501G is not only applicable for non-food packaging such as personal and home care, but also for food packaging such as dried food, chilled food, and frozen food. Latterly, success cases as recyclable pouches, contributed from the collaboration of SCG Chemicals and the value chain, have commercialized in the market.
Contributing to a better environment, "BWO1501G" technology is considered to be limited compatible with PE flexibles recycling stream according to RecyClass Recyclability Evaluation Protocol for PE films, which further the certification body suggested that plastic resin generated by the recycling process may be used in high-quality applications such as PE blown films up to 25%. Moreover, SCG Chemicals also proved the innovation's recyclability with recycling stream partners "Veolia," and results shown positively as recycled resin generated from packaging with BWO1501G can be efficiently blown up as a film with a proportion of 50% of the total film.
Besides, SCG Chemicals observes CO2 emission reduction when incorporated BWO1501G into recyclable packaging by internal calculation referred to the domestic standard method, the result reveals that SCGC success case recyclable pouch with BWO1501G can achieve 41% kg CO2 less than non-recyclable pouch. Specifically, the previous multi-material structure as Nylon laminated with LLDPE releases 0.0235 kgCO2/bag while the recyclable structure as coated MDOPE with the coating laminated with LLDPE releases only 0.0139 kgCO2/bag.
In conclusion, BWO1501G, a barrier coating agent certified by RecyClass, was developed to enable recyclable packaging by overcoming poor oxygen barrier challenges. It can be used in both food and non-food packaging applications with successful cases launched. For a greener world, CO2 emission reduction caused by using recyclable packaging with BWO1501G is achieved based on our success case.
