Panasonic Energy Co., Ltd., the battery manufacturing subsidiary of Panasonic Group, is pleased to announce new paper-based packaging for consumer batteries in Australia. Aligned with Panasonic's dedication to sustainability, this eco-conscious initiative aims to eliminate around 500kg of plastic annually and is forecast to save over 36,000 sqm of paper and reduce CO2 emissions by around 1,450kgCO2e overall each year in the Australian and New Zealand markets combined.
Panasonic's new paper-based packaging for batteries represents a substantial advancement in minimising plastic usage compared to traditional packaging methods. The most significant benefit of this environmentally friendly approach is a remarkable 75 percent reduction in plastic compared to previous packaging. The inner and outer boxes, constructed from more than 70 per cent recycled paper content, reduce overall paper use by more than 30 per cent.
The new packaging will initially be available in the 2 and 4-pack Panasonic Alkaline batteries in Australia in June. Its introduction is in line with the rising demand for sustainable products and government initiatives aimed at phasing out single-use plastics.
Panasonic’s latest advancement in its packaging also complements the company’s membership with the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) – an initiative to develop a circular economy for packaging in Australia – and its unwavering commitment to offer consumers accessible and sustainable choices. Driven by the escalating impacts of climate change and issues related to plastic waste, the call for eco-friendly packaging has surged in recent years. According to a survey conducted by the Panasonic Groupii, 90 percent of respondents felt that there was excess packaging and plastic used in products, and 80 per cent value environment-friendly packaging when purchasing products.
"Panasonic Group is among the global leaders in environmental action in our industry. Locally, we are proud to be able to offer more sustainable packaging solutions," said Chris Moore, Business Manager, Batteries, at Panasonic Australia.
In line with Panasonic Group's environmental policies, Panasonic Energy has taken several proactive measures in recent years, including reducing energy consumption, incorporating renewable energy sources, and implementing carbon offsets.
"Panasonic remains focused on making our operation more sustainable, and listening to our customers about the commitments they are also making in the market. The introduction of eco-friendly packaging for our batteries is a step in the right direction, and one that is part of a very important journey for our company," said Chris Moore.
