The Green Agenda
In recent years consumers have become more aware of environmental issues and vowed to take action, with 80% of British consumers now stating they prefer eco-friendly packaging1.
The increased media coverage around environmental issues and global events has cemented the green agenda nationwide, increasing the pressure on manufacturers, retailers and e-commerce businesses to review their packaging options and the amount of unnecessary waste being produced.
Consumer opinion and pressure has steadily grown year on year and now businesses must adapt and opt for more sustainable alternatives across their business to ensure customers return and remain loyal. Over the next 12 months I believe there will be an increased interest from businesses to embrace greener packaging solutions in line with consumer demand.
Innovative Technology
Technology is always at the forefront of change and that’s no different for the packaging sector. Recent technological advances are providing opportunities to develop new and exciting sustainable packaging solutions including bioplastics, bio-derived materials, water-soluble packaging and synthetic materials. While these are currently under research they may offer benefits including increased durability and flexibility, lightweight design and zero waste. 2023 is set to introduce a range of new materials to the market to provide a variety of options for British businesses.
Natural Materials
The increase in new sustainable packaging materials is an exciting trend set to transform the industry in the coming 12 months. Natural materials such as seaweed are likely to increase in popularity amongst many businesses, especially those which are consumer facing.
Currently, many mattresses are returned under comfort guarantees utilising single use plastics when reusable bags can be used. Nearly two thirds (59%)2 of consumers are now making a conscious choice to purchase products which are classed as biodegradable, compostable, plantable or reusable, shopping trends that many brands can no longer ignore. Next year, prepare to see many of our favourite brands revamping their packaging to embrace greener alternatives.
Cost Saving
With the rate of inflation reaching an all time high, businesses are set to trim costs wherever possible. From soaring energy costs to consumers tightening their purse strings, businesses across a range of sectors will be looking to reduce their spend on packaging and utilise waste streams within their manufacturing process. The current financial climate could bring with it a reason for many companies to adapt to new alternative packaging, supporting the latest innovations and potentially encouraging them to try sustainable alternatives.
