The company will also unveil its new dedicated paper bottle filling machine to help other drinks brands move from glass to the paper Frugal Bottles and join the paper bottle revolution.
Frugal Bottles are five times lighter than glass with a carbon footprint 84% lower than glass and are on display at Cantina Goccia’s stand in Hall 5 D57 at ProWein from March 19-21.
Cantina Goccia has already committed to producing 80% of its wine in the paper bottles.
British sustainable packaging company Frugalpac manufactured the bottles for Cantina Goccia.
The new release Umbrian wines from Cantina Goccia in the paper bottle to be launched at ProWein are:
- Rosso – a lightly wooded blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot delivering a spicy and plummy Umbrian red. Well balanced with beautiful red and black fruit
- Bianco – a combination of Vermentino minerality and honeyed fruit tones of Grechetto delivering a delightfully fresh Umbrian white wine
- Rosato – a rosé blend of Pinot Nero with a hint of Cabernet Sauvignon delivering a fresh, pale coloured Umbrian rosè wine. The Cabernet depth of flavour, with the freshness of Pinot Nero results in a smooth, crisp wine with strong notes of raspberries on the palate, perfect for the summer.
The eye-catching new bottles by award-winning designer Miguel de Almeida depict the wildlife and local environment around the Umbrian vineyard
With extensive experience of using and filling this innovative packaging format, Cantina Goccia commissioned and installed the world’s first purpose-built filling machine designed exclusively for paper bottles at its winery near Lake Trasimeno in Umbria.
They have been inundated with requests from drink brands keen to move to the paper Frugal Bottle.
The facility will initially be able to fill 1,000 bottles per hour with the opportunity to double capacity in the future.
Since launching its wine in the paper Frugal Bottle in June 2020, Cantina Goccia has filled more than 120,000 paper Frugal Bottles.
As the Frugal Bottle has a carbon footprint 84% lower than a glass bottle, Cantina Goccia’s filled bottles have saved at least 55.2 metric tonnes of carbon. That’s as much carbon saved as a petrol car driving 137,018 miles.
Cantina Goccia has always strived to reduce its environmental footprint by implementing a wide range of innovative measures: from organic farming practices, and significantly reduced tilling of the land, to applying energy-saving initiatives such as the installation of solar PV panels and heat pumps to produce its award-winning Umbrian wines as sustainably as possible.
Cantina Goccia co-owner, Ceri Parke, said:
“We’re really excited to be launching our new range of wines at ProWein in the world’s first and only commercially available paper wine bottle.
“As well as being five times lighter than a glass bottle, using paper allows us to use the whole bottle with your design. We think the designs will stand out whether it’s on the supermarket shelf or the kitchen table.
“Sustainability is our DNA so moving from glass to a paper bottle made from 94% recycled paperboard and using less carbon to produce, transport and dispose of, was natural for us.
“We’re proud to have helped lead the paper bottle revolution but it’s important to make it easier for other drinks producers to make the move to more sustainable packaging.
“That’s why we now offer a bespoke filling solution, designed specifically for paper Frugal Bottles to help other drinks producers reduce their carbon footprint too.”
Malcolm Waugh, CEO of Frugalpac which produces the Frugal Bottle in Ipswich, added: “Cantina Goccia were the first drinks brand to make the move to our paper bottle and they’ve seen the massive advantages it’s brought. Their commitment to launch all their new wines in our Frugal Bottle and help other producers make the move is the proof that paper bottles are here to stay.”
More than 30 drinks brands around the world are currently using the Frugal Bottle and selling it in 18 countries.
