One of the UK’s largest independent plastics recycling businesses, Jay Plas has reduced its own annual plastic use by 35 tonnes following advice from packaging experts Lindum.
The company reached out to Lindum when it discovered it had been using multiple different wrapping machines across five of its sites. Each machine was using different and inconsistent specifications of film, and the business wanted expert advice on the best way to optimise their process and consolidate their supply to enable them to save on overall costs.
Lindum visited each Jay Plas site and carried out trials and optimisation on each machine. After analysing the packaging products, equipment, and processes, Lindum’s expert team set about identifying ways to improve the company’s efficiency and demonstrate cost savings.
Once an in-depth review of the systems and processes was complete, Lindum’s experts highlighted their suggested optimisations and efficiency improvements, including the best product options. This allowed the customer to consolidate their wrapping films to just three different specifications across all its sites, according to the machine type in question. These were a combination of high-performance Nano stretch films and pre-stretched machine films.
Rick Sellars, Technical Director at Lindum said: “Having now consistently supplied Jay Plas for the last 12 months, we have been able to carry out repeat visits to audit the results of the updates and ensure we are on track to help the business achieve its cost-saving goals.
“Before adopting the films recommended by Lindum, the company was using an average of 623g of plastic, now, it is using an average of 183g. This represents a plastic reduction of over 35 tonnes per year and an annual saving of over £36,000.”
“In addition, our engineering team have been pleased to work with the company to service, upgrade and replace pallet wrapping machinery across a number of sites as required.”
Based in Grimsby, Lindum specialises in pallet stability and stretch film wrap to help companies save money, reduce plastic, improve packaging performance, and reduce CO2 emissions.
