For the third consecutive year, Antalis has partnered with Brief Cases for the Smart Luxury Packaging competition, in collaboration with Norwich University of the Arts.
The competition forms part of the university’s BA (Hons) Graphic Design course, aiming to put the students’ skills to the test with a challenging brief. This year, the students were tasked with creating standout luxury packaging for the confectionery sector, using materials from Antalis’ paper and paperboard ranges.
The Smart Luxury Packaging – Confectionery Sector brief required students to explore how to create standout on the shelf, reflect luxury in packaging design, and communicate a message of sustainability through the packaging concept. From the entries, the projects which best met the brief were awarded winning places; gold, silver and bronze, with 3 students also receiving highly commended certificates for their portfolio. “Once again, all responses to the brief were of an exceptional standard, showing both creativity and talent!” commented Brief Cases’ Veronica Heaven.
A judging panel of 10 industry professionals reviewed entries according to relevant criteria including packaging design, recognising opportunity, impact, commercial viability, brand strength and presentation. ‘30 Hour Chocolate Liqueurs’, submitted by student Millie Lumley and inspired by a 160-year-old clock passed down through family generations, was chosen from a strong shortlist of 13 entries as the winning project. Silver was awarded to student Florence Warne with concept Sister Pralines and, in Bronze place, Maddison Whittaker with HUDU.
Designed to be a ‘celebration of time’, which is symbolised by the antique 30-hour clock related theme, the intricate ‘30 Hour Chocolate Liqueurs’ concept packaging contains 30 rum flavoured chocolate liqueurs, with rum aged from 1 year to 30 years. For the outer box, Millie selected Performa Light CarbonZero, a carbon neutral cartonboard with a triple coated topside that allows for a high-quality printing finish. MetsäBoard prime FBB EB, a food grade, light weight, fully compostable and recyclable material that is coated with an eco-barrier to reduce grease permeation, was chosen by Millie to wrap the individual chocolates. To provide contrast, Millie decided upon the textured matt finish of Rives Tradition 100% Recycled Bright White for the accompanying leaflet – 250gsm for the cover and 170gsm for the text pages.
