deltaH Innovations’ headline-grabbing Cool>Can™ marks its debut at London Packaging Week. Inventor James Vyse will take the stage to offer insights into one-of-a-kind innovation.
Visitors to the two-day exhibition at Excel London this September will be the first to experience a fully branded, commercialised, and shelf-ready Cool>Can in what promises to be a watershed moment for beverage packaging. The result of two years of development, the can uses a push-button-activated chemical reaction to rapidly chill room-temperature beverages, producing a temperature drop of around 10–15°C depending on the starting temperature. The reaction uses only water and a patented salt-based coolant, without compromising recyclability.
deltaH Innovations founder and CEO James Vyse has partnered with his Welsh compatriots Brains Brewery to bring Bayside Welsh Lager to market in a fully recyclable self-cooling can, demonstrating the commercial viability of the groundbreaking technology. Attendees can experience the can for themselves in the Discovery Theatre at London Packaging Week, where Vyse will take to the stage to share exclusive details from the development journey behind the Cool>Can.
“London Packaging Week will be the first place to see a commercial Cool>Can,” said Vyse, speaking ahead of the event. “Up until now, we’ve been sending and discussing prototypes, but what we’ll actually be presenting is the first Cool>Can in a commercial partnership, with the brand actually on the can. It’s a huge leap from technical development and towards mainstream market adoption.”
The collaboration brings together a Welsh inventor and one of Wales’ best-known breweries. And, while it is focused on the future of beverage packaging, it is also a tribute to the country’s pioneering place in packaging history. In 1935, Felinfoel Brewery in Llanelli produced Britain’s first canned beer. Vyse believes Cool>Can now gives Wales another significant place in the story of the beverage can.
“We have had many conversations with brands, but this one felt right,” he says. “I’m definitely a proud Welshman, teaming up with a Welsh brand and creating another piece of Welsh history, as I believe this is going to create something special in this business. London Packaging Week is a chance to get in on the ground floor as we scale up to take this to international markets.
“My dream is to get on a plane and land anywhere and see a Cool>Can!”
London Packaging Week takes place on 16 & 17 September at Excel London. Vyse will share the engineering, regulatory and commercial story behind the Cool>Can in his presentation, The self-cooling can: turning packaging innovation into reality, at 12:00 on Thursday 17 September in the Discovery Theatre.
