Scottish compostable foodservice packaging company, Vegware Ltd. (Vegware), has released its third impact report and its first since becoming a certified B Corporation. Achieving certification was the culmination of a two-year effort and underlines the company’s commitment to creating a positive environmental and social impact. In recognition of the certification, Vegware’s report looks at the company’s impact in 2023 through the B Lab’s key impact areas of: Governance, People, Customers and Environment. B Lab uses these impact areas to assess applications for B Corp certification. In framing their impact through these areas, Vegware is demonstrating its commitment to the B Corp mission of working towards an inclusive, equitable and regenerative economy.
This year’s report takes a candid review of the business’ efforts in 2023 and details its work in becoming a certified B Corp. As well as celebrating Vegware’s successes, the report acknowledges where targets were not met and sets out plans to achieve them in 2024.
Some of the highlights include:
- An updated brand message to clarify Vegware’s mission
- Close the Loop, Vegware’s trade waste collection service for central belt Scotland, was rebranded and the service reached a landmark 10,000 binloads of food waste and compostable packaging in 2023
- The Vegware Community Fund supported 180 different projects and donated over 150 orders
- Composting case studies with the Royal Opera House, City of York Council, and the University of Roehampton
- Launch of a Composting Kit in Italy to bolster Vegware’s environmental support to Italian customers
Helen Mathieson, Vegware’s Managing Director said:
“Our 2023 report represents a candid appraisal of our environmental and social impact. Whilst we are pleased to demonstrate continued improvement, we know we have more to do in both what we report and how we report it. Reflecting on our B Corp certification process, we know how we can improve and are focused on doing so. In 2024, we plan an increased emphasis on supporting non-profits through our Community Fund and providing more volunteering opportunities for our team.”
Vegware’s third impact report also outlines the business’ goals for 2024. In 2024 Vegware plans to take a more ambitious approach to reporting for the fourth edition, including: product carbon footprint data, greater accuracy in reporting of office energy consumption and details of their ongoing Transparency Talks campaign. Next year’s report will continue to provide an appraisal of the business’ impact - upholding Vegware’s values as a brand and a certified B Corp.
