At Booth 8.0F34 at this year’s CPHI, SÜDPACK Medica will showcase products that meet both current and future standards for functionality, quality, and traceability, delivering enhanced environmental performance. The spotlight will be on continued development of the recyclable PharmaGuard® blister concept, as well as low-particle pouch solutions designed to meet a wide range of pharmaceutical packaging requirements. Industry professionals interested in learning more about the approaches SÜDPACK Medica is pursuing to support the “green transformation” in healthcare can attend the presentation by Business Development Director Jürgen Bodenmüller, entitled “Sustainable Plastic Solutions for the Pharmaceutical Industry”, on October 28.
Sustainability remains a top priority for the pharmaceutical industry. However, when it comes to developing and producing sustainable plastic film solutions, efforts to lower carbon emissions or move toward plastic neutrality through circular economy models often run up against the limitations imposed by cGMP and other regulatory requirements for pharmaceutical packaging.
PP-based mono blister solution for oral solid doses
With PharmaGuard®, SÜDPACK Medica has developed a pioneering packaging concept that already meets the future sustainability requirements of the global pharmaceutical industry – including the PPWR – and is already available on the market today. This mono-material solution offers a high recyclability and delivers a significantly lower climate impact (CO2-eq.) compared to conventional multilayer structures made from aluminum and PET. According to a Sphera LCA verified in accordance with ISO 14040/44, one square meter of the high-performance film – consisting of a 300 μm bottom film and a 90 μm top film – generates just 1.28 kg CO2-eq. across all stages of the value chain, based on the use of green electricity. The mono-material is free from phthalates, vinyl, PFAS, and halogens, and offers an excellent water vapor barrier, outstanding push-through performance, and efficient processing on existing packaging machines. It supports both high-speed inline printing and on-demand printing for small batch sizes – ideal for handling a large number of product variants or rapidly responding to fluctuating demand via late-stage customization.
Alongside the award-winning transparent version, SÜDPACK Medica will also unveil a white version of the CPHI blister film. The base and lidding films were also developed in close collaboration with machine manufacturers and the pharmaceutical industry. When printed, the white film ensures improved legibility and offers visual protection for sensitive content.
Comprehensive range of pouch-making materials
At this year’s CPHI in Frankfurt, SÜDPACK Medica will also showcase its extensive range of low-particle standard pouch-making materials. These solutions are ideal for packaging products such as stoppers, filters, and connectors, or for use as simple transfer packaging from cleanroom to cleanroom. In addition to standard options, SÜDPACK’s experts continue to develop and manufacture customized pouch solutions in a variety of formats and material combinations. These solutions can be equipped with tailored opening systems and are available in both printed and unprinted versions.
To meet growing demand in this product segment, the company is currently expanding its site in Coulmer, France – most notably by doubling the size of the ISO 7 cleanroom area. The first machines have already been installed, and the new facility is scheduled to open in 2026.
