your coffee taste®, a direct-to-consumer coffee platform built around personalised coffee experiences and on-demand roasting, has partnered with Sonoco Consumer Packaging EMEA to develop a tailored packaging solution using GREENCAN® , enabling full customisation from freshly roasted coffee beans to the packaging design.
your coffee taste® combines technology, community insights and craftsmanship to match each consumer with their ideal coffee profile. Through its platform and app, users define their taste preferences, which are translated into a personalised coffee selection, roasted on demand only after ordering. This ensures maximum freshness while eliminating the need for pre-produced inventory. A key enabler of this approach is the packaging. Working closely together, Sonoco and your coffee taste® developed a solution based on GREENCAN®, whose integrated barrier properties allow CO₂ to escape while preventing oxygen from entering. This makes the packaging ideally suited for freshly roasted whole beans and perfectly aligned with your coffee taste®’s on-demand production model.
This personalised approach extends all the way to the packaging itself. Working closely together, Sonoco and your coffee taste® developed a solution that allows each consumer’s design to be digitally printed directly onto the GREENCAN® using a direct-to-can digital printing process powered by HP PageWide print technology and a specialised Cando printing system from IdeeGo GmbH. This enables full visual personalisation for consumers, as well as new applications such as campaign-based designs or fully customised B2B coffee solutions tailored to corporate identities.
The result is a fully tailored experience — from the coffee itself to the final package.
“We are rethinking coffee as a fully personalised experience. That means challenging conventions at every level, including how coffee is produced, packaged and delivered. Our on-demand approach requires a packaging solution that actively supports freshness, not just preserves it. With Sonoco’s GreenCan®, we found exactly that: a solution that allows freshly roasted coffee to degas while protecting it from oxygen. At the same time, taking personalisation all the way to the packaging required a true engineering innovation. Together with our partners, we enabled direct digital printing onto the can, turning every package into a unique touchpoint — whether for individual consumers or branded B2B experiences. The choice of a high paper-content packaging with Sonoco’s GreenCan® was an obvious one for us, both in terms of design - paper being the best canvas for creativity- and in how we approach materials. As we rethink how coffee is produced and delivered, it was important for us to choose a renewable, paper-based packaging solution that allows us to align product quality, customer experience and a more future-ready approach to packaging.” Says Peter Schöffler, founder of your coffee taste®
For roasted coffee beans, maintaining freshness and aroma is essential. GREENCAN® provides protection against moisture and oxygen, while offering a rigid, premium format aligned with your coffee taste®’s positioning. Its customised print enabled by your coffee taste®’s direct on-can digital printing enhances the unboxing experience - a key moment in the direct-to-consumer journey.
Beyond performance, the choice of packaging reflects a broader shift.
GREENCAN® is based on a high paper content (up to 98%) made from 100% recycled paper boards. Paper is a renewable substrate offering an alternative to plastic packaging. Sonoco’s innovative paper-based cans include the proper barrier to maintain functionality while limiting the environmental impact and maximising recyclability. This aligns with the growing demand for packaging solutions designed with circularity in mind, where material choice, recyclability and resource efficiency are increasingly scrutinised.
The move also reflects the direction of the European regulation, including the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which is accelerating expectations around recyclability, material reduction and responsible sourcing. In this context, paper-based solutions are gaining momentum across dry product categories, including coffee.
“We are seeing a clear acceleration towards paper packaging solutions for dry products,” said Francesco Giannolo, VP Commercial at Sonoco Consumer Packaging EMEA/APAC. “With GREENCAN®, we support innovative brands like your coffee taste® in joining this transition—combining performance, design flexibility and alignment with the direction of PPWR and circularity requirements.”
The collaboration highlights how packaging can support emerging business models.
your coffee taste®’s on-demand roasting approach—producing coffee only after ordering—ensures freshness while reducing unnecessary inventory. At the same time, the packaging enables both product protection and full design flexibility, supporting new forms of personalisation and brand interaction. More broadly, this project illustrates the convergence between product personalisation, sustainability, digital engagement and packaging innovation. By aligning on-demand production, tailored coffee experiences and fully customisable packaging, Your coffee taste® delivers a new level of individualisation, while joining a wider movement towards renewable, paper-based packaging solutions.
For Sonoco Consumer Packaging EMEA, the collaboration demonstrates how its portfolio supports customers in navigating both market expectations and regulatory evolution. Coffee aficionados will be able to experience your coffee taste® firsthand at Interpack, where a dedicated coffee bar will be hosted at the Sonoco stand Hall 9, stand C34 on 11 and 12 May.
