Leading sugar manufacturer, Ragus Sugars has reduced its plastic packaging by 50% as it becomes the first company to trial new bio-based plastic film from Lindum.
In a drive to make its packaging processes more sustainable, Ragus appointed Lindum to review its current pallet wrap who recommend a bio-based plastic film, produced from sugarcane that retained both strength and clarity to highlight branded packaging.
Rick Sellars, Sales Manager at Lindum says: “Ragus were keen to explore alternative packaging films that were environmentally friendly and guaranteed pallet stability during transit. Due to the nature of the product, the solution needed to retain strength and keep the sugar products secure to prevent damage and subsequent wastage.
“Another key consideration was clarity. Ragus wanted to improve overall pallet presentation with the use of clear plastic film that would highlight its iconic branding during transit. The current film had stripes running through which made the packaging unrecognisable.”
Following an in-depth audit, Lindum introduced Ragus Sugars to Bio, a new range of high-strength bio-based plastic wrap made from natural polymers found in sugar cane. Helping to protect the environment, Lindum’s Nano Bio film reduces CO² impact by 40% compared to the equivalent petroleum-based stretch film and removes Plastic Packaging Tax liability without sacrificing performance.
Taking Lindum’s advice, Ragus agreed to become the first sugar company to trial sustainable, bio-based packaging. Overall, the company reduced its plastic usage by 50%, and reduced CO2 by 13,764kg per year. Like traditional plastic wrap, the Bio solution is flexible yet highly robust to ensure pallet stability. The Bio film is also fully transparent, meaning the company’s logo would remain recognisable in transit.
Rick adds: “Before switching, the company was using 160g of plastic. Now, it is using 62g, which equates to a 50% saving. There is no difference in overall quality, or stretch between the sustainable Bio film, and the non-renewable solutions made from crude oil, making it an ideal choice for companies looking to improve sustainability.”
When comparing the Bio solution to the previous film, the Henry Eastick, Manager at Ragus Sugars commented on the innate strength of Bio. “The performance on the Bio film is identical to the previous non-sustainable stretch film we were using, and the clarity of the product means our branding can be clearly identified throughout transit.”
