Tacos are notoriously hard to package and most taco takeaway systems are not fit for purpose. They use a generic tray and lid with the inclusion of an insert. This makes it hard to retain heat, keep tacos intact and allow for good presentation once delivered. They are also far too big for the actual product.
Wahaca, one of the leading Mexican Restaurants in the UK, teamed up with BioPak and Deliveroo to create an innovative solution to resolve the renowned taco packaging problem. THE BRIEF: Wahaca wanted a sustainable bespoke takeaway solution for their signature taco dishes.
Their brief had three objectives:
1. Reduce the environmental impact.
2. Maintain the same quality and experience as instore consumption.
3. Reduce packaging costs
THE SOLUTION:
BioPak’s solution was the first-ever certified home compostable (NF T51-800) printed plant fibre taco box with no added PFAS. The taco box was designed specifically for Wahaca using rapidly renewable plant fibre pulp, a by-product of the sugar refining industry. The lid and the cavities hold the fillings in place keeping the tacos hot and intact during delivery. There is an improved environmental impact resulting in a 42% reduction in packaging weight and material usage. Using our taco boxes has resulted in 9 tonnes of plastic being avoided each year and a 69% reduction in CO2 emissions.
Packaging costs have been reduced by 37% At BioPak, we’re proud to support like-minded foodservice businesses that share our commitment to the environment and social accountability.
