Its new roll design for cling film, aluminium foil, and baking parchment, introduced in 2024, are made to fit the Speedwrap Pro range of dispensers without a plastic adapter insert - a first-to-market innovation. Combined, this innovative design saves one catering business, used as an illustrative example, 67.5kg of plastic over the course of the year – enough plastic inserts to reach a height of 351m, if they were stacked on top of one another. To illustrate the scale of this saving, if it were a building, it would be one of the tallest in Europe, dwarfing the Eiffel Tower and the Shard.
“Each plastic adapter insert is relatively small. However, given the amount of wrapping your average catering business uses in a year, they add up to an enormous amount of plastic waste,” said Bryony Barlow, Commercial Director at Prowrap. “If every catering and hospitality business in the industry used these insert-free rolls, there’s no telling how much unnecessary plastic we would save – but we know it’s enough to make a massive difference.
“We’re proud to be a business that doesn’t forget how these little details can make a big difference. If there’s an aspect of our products that we can improve, we’ll work to do it. By once again showing leadership on sustainability, we’re working to ensure that our business and the wider foodservice sector are both minimising impact on the environment.”
The news cements Prowrap as a leader in the sustainable food wrapping space, following its revolutionary launch of a dispenser recycling scheme – also a first for the industry. This scheme sees the company collect old, broken, or unwanted wrapping dispensers of any brand to reuse and recycle their components where possible, preventing old dispensers from ending up in landfill.
“We know there’s always more to do,” continued Barlow. “Everything any business does has an impact on the world around it. We’re committed to making our impact a positive one – and the sustainable progress we have made so far is just the start.”
