The Solinatra-ATMI Center of Excellence is a pioneering educational establishment, leading the way in Indonesia to make the transition from polluting plastics to fully natural, biodegradable materials. Bringing together the engineering expertise of ATMI and the innovative materials of Solinatra, the Center of Excellence will educate a new generation of industry and position Indonesia as a leader in the production of biodegradable products.
Speaking on the collaboration Solinatra Chair of the Board, Roland Pluut, says: “The future is sustainable, and this collaboration will educate the next generation of engineers using our next generation materials. A plastic pollution free future is possible with Solinatra’s fully natural, compostable alternatives.”

The announcement comes ahead of the Hannover Messe, which takes place April 17-21 2023, at which Indonesia are the partner country and ATMI and Solinatra are exhibiting together on the Indonesia pavilion. Thanks to the support from Indonesian Ministry of Industry, Solinatra-ATMI together with related ecosystem will initiate this transformation.
Since 1968, ATMI polytechnic has been a leading provider of high vocational education, with a focus on manufacturing, design engineering and mechatronic. As the pioneer of Indonesian high vocational education model, ATMI was awarded the best practice award of productive youth development from the Jacobs Foundation in 2009 and continues its contribution as Best Practice of 50 years Swiss Skills Up Development Program in 2022 (SECO, Swiss Embassy Jakarta).
Now in collaboration with Solinatra, the establishment of the Solinatra-ATMI Center of Excellence will educate a new generation of students on the processing and injection moulding of a new generation of materials.
The innovative bioplastic materials developed by Solinatra are 100% natural, fully biodegradable and compostable. Solinatra is the truly sustainable alternative to (single use) plastic, suitable for the production of packaging and products without the use of fossil based plastics. This exciting partnership of scientific-technical cooperation will promote a more sustainable future, inline with Sustainable Development Goals and net zero targets.
Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world, and the second largest plastic polluter. As the world’s largest archipelago, with over 17,000 islands and 81,000 kilometres of coastlines the issue of plastic pollution in the rivers, ocean and coastline is keenly felt. In 2020, Indonesia set ambitious targets to be entirely plastic pollution free by 2040, and to cut marine plastic waste by 70% by 2025. Today’s announcement of the collaboration means a tangible contribution to realize Indonesia’s ambitious goals.
Plastic pollution is a global issue that affects us all, and requires innovation and collaboration to overcome. Working together we can create a more sustainable future, free of plastic pollution and in harmony with nature.
