SICK appeared at this year’s IMHX 2025 intralogistics show at the NEC Birmingham from 9th – 11th September demonstrating its leadership in the field of sensor intelligence. The company showcased a wide range of products at its booth (F54), including the newly-launched Lector 83x range of advanced camera-based code readers and the debut for its Lector 8512 Ultra Scene advanced image-based code reader.
The SICK IMHX booth also featured a working example of the SICK Dimensioning-Weighing-Scanning (DWS) track and trace system that identifies, measures and weighs objects dynamically, and the Master Data Analyser (MDA) vision track-and-trace system, which captures dimensions, weight, and 1D and 2D codes of objects, as well as creating object images in a single operation.
SICK’s Lector camera-based code readers provide advanced connectivity, accuracy and reliability
Dubbed ‘The Explorer’, the high-performance SICK Lector 83x for tracking and tracing finished products and components launched at IMHX, delivering flexible identification for all popular 1D and 2D printed barcodes including, but not limited to, Datamatrix and QR codes. The Lector 8305 (5 MP) version was available to see in action on the SICK stand and it is also available in a 3 MP variant. Equipped with AI segmentation and a high power CPU realising 75% faster image processing time and maximum read rates at speeds of up to 2.5 m/s. Delivering improved accuracy, speed and reliability, the camera reads ID codes with super-resolution using subsequent images overlay for poor quality and difficult to read codes. 16 high performance LEDs provides high resistance to ambient light, while an optional Polarisation filter reduces glare to read through film.
The compact Lector 83x is suitable for medium reading distances due to its impressive depth of field and comes with exceptional on-board connectivity, including support for numerous industrial protocols. Easy to install, it can be intuitively configured with a web server to be ready-to-use in minutes, while its IP65-rated metal housing makes it robust and capable of withstanding harsh environments.
The Lector 83x forms part of SICK’s range of next-generation cameras, which includes the Lector 85x for longer distances and bigger fields of view required for wide conveyors or pallet reading applications (available in 5 MP, 9 MP and 12 MP variants).
The Lector 85x range now includes the Lector 8512 Ultra Scene, which premiered at IMHX. Visitors to the SICK stand were able to witness the industry-leading field of view and depth of field delivered by the Lector 8512 Ultra Scene. The 12 MP of the new Ultra Scene version of the Lector 8512 are distributed in a letterbox format. With an imager providing 6048 pixels x 2048 pixels, the Lector Ultra Scene delivers a step change in the field of view provided by image-based code readers. The result is a reader that can detect the smallest codes over the widest conveyors using only one device. It is now practical to cover conveyor widths or pallet heights of more than 1.5 m with a single device. The result: less hardware, lower complexity and reduced system cost.
SICK’s Lector range covers a broad array of applications, reducing manual rework, increasing throughput, enhancing fulfilment and speeding up production in sectors ranging from retail, logistics, robotics and e-commerce, to airports, manufacturing and industrial vehicles.
Interactive dimensioning, weighing and scanning demos with SICK’s DWS and MDA
The SICK stand also featured an interactive live demonstration of DWS, enabling visitors to try out the groundbreaking dimensioning, weighing and scanning solution in person. SICK’s Legal For Trade MID Certified DWS systems can be used by couriers and parcel companies to bill customers based on the exact weight and size of their parcel and by retailers to ensure they are making the most of their storage and fulfilment capacity in vans, trucks or planes. The technology reads 1D or 2D codes, weighs, and measures items and parcels to optimise storage and delivery of products, as well as reduce costs and protect revenue. SICK’s compatible management software assists with improved compliance and performance.
Alongside DWS, SICK also showcased its MDA, a simplified, handheld version of DWS for lower throughput, smaller objects and facilities operating more manual processes. MDA can be used in a similar way to DWS to sample and spot check items or input master data relating to weight, barcode and volume of inventory.
