Seda International Packaging Group has won the Food category at the European Carton Excellence Award 2026 (ECEA) with the Da Vinci Clamshell, an innovative paper-based foodservice packaging solution patented by Seda.
Organised by Pro Carton and the European Carton Makers Association (ECMA), the European Carton Excellence Award recognises outstanding achievements in cartonboard packaging across Europe. Entries are assessed by a panel of packaging experts against criteria including innovation, convenience, design, production techniques and cost efficiency. The 2026 winners were announced at the Awards Gala held in Rome on 17 September.
A new approach to the foodservice clamshell
The award-winning Da Vinci Clamshell is a patented Seda innovation and the first rounded paper-based clamshell of its kind for foodservice applications, introducing an innovative structural approach designed around both the product and the consumer experience.
Rather than simply adapting a conventional format, Seda re-engineered the pack around the shape of the food product and the way consumers interact with it. The rounded top follows the natural contours of the product, helping improve stability and reduce lateral movement inside the pack, while the inclined base makes it easier to grip and remove.
An intuitive open-and-close system further enhances convenience for both foodservice operators and consumers. The design also ensures optimal stackability and efficient handling, meeting the operational requirements of high-volume foodservice environments.
The award highlights Seda’s ability to combine structural innovation, industrial performance and user experience, translating the specific needs of the foodservice industry into a distinctive, scalable and proprietary paper-based packaging solution.
The Da Vinci Clamshell is converted by Seda International Packaging Group, using cartonboard manufactured by MM Board & Paper.
