RUSAL, a leading global aluminium producer, has passed the international verification of the carbon footprint of its aluminium brand ALLOW INERTA.
A branch of TÜV AUSTRIA Standards & Compliance conducted an independent verification of greenhouse gas emissions from aluminium production at RUSAL Krasnoyarsk Aluminium Smelter and confirmed that aluminium produced with inert anode technology has specific emissions of 0.01 metric tons of CO2 equivalent per tonne of metal (Scope 1 and 2).
This level is dozens of times lower than the global aluminium industry’s average and complies with the strictest global climate, environmental, and industry requirements. ALLOW INERTA aluminium is produced by a revolutionary technology on inert anode cells, using renewable hydropower.
The verification was conducted in 2023 in accordance with the specifications of the ISO 14067:2018 standard "Greenhouse gases - Carbon footprint of products - Requirements and guidelines for quantification," as well as other internationally recognized standards, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the International Aluminium Institute.
The carbon footprint of products is becoming an increasingly important factor in purchasing decisions. Today, key global metal-consuming companies rely on it and impose more stringent requirements on suppliers in terms of their climate and environmental responsibility. At the same time, disclosing data on the carbon footprint of products has become a mandatory requirement in many markets. Krasnoyarsk Aluminium Smelter has already released several thousand tons of ALLOW INERTA aluminium at the pilot site, which have been delivered to consumers.
RUSAL is the first company in the world to use inert anodes instead of carbon anodes in industrial production of aluminium. Their use in the electrolysis process allows for almost complete elimination of greenhouse gas emissions (oxygen is released instead of carbon dioxide), and in combination with renewable hydro energy, the technology ensures an unprecedentedly low carbon footprint for Krasnoyarsk aluminium.
