UK-based flexible packaging specialist Parkside has launched a revolutionary range of sustainable lidding films as a next-generation solution for brands seeking to solve their packaging sustainability challenges, as part of its Sustainable 7 product strategy.
Comprised of renewable and certified compostable films, paper-based solutions, and recyclable monomers, Parkside’s range of lidding films is now augmented by its unique ParkScribe® laser scoring technology. This enables the creation of easy peel-and-reseal PET lids that are integral to the pack, meaning the film stays attached through the recycling process.
“ParkScribe uses a laser to score substrates quickly and with micron-level precision,” said Joshua Swann, Head of Technical at Parkside. “It means we can cut through only a few layers of the lidding material in specific areas to create a lid that peels away, then reseals without the need for additional glue strips, zips, or stickers which can affect recyclability. When weld sealed to a tray it is fully recyclable under current OPRL guidelines provided the polymer is the same as the one used in the tray, while still being easy to open and reseal to meet consumer demands for convenience.
“This is just one demonstration of the innovation present in our lidding film range. Our latest range of recyclable plastic, 30%-plus recycled content, paper-based, and compostable films enables customers to be flexible when developing packaging that perfectly suits the needs of their application.”
Parkside’s fully-accredited home and industrially compostable duplex laminate films are regarded as industry-leading in terms of sustainability and performance throughout the supply chain for many food applications – and when used with pulp trays, it provides a fully compostable solution. However, the expanded range also includes options that can provide a greater level of oxygen or moisture barrier if needed for chilled meats, soft fruits, dairy products, and more, helping to reduce the impact of food waste.
“Our Recoflex™ range includes resealable films in regular and high barrier formats, as well as a kraft paper format for plastic-free applications,” added Swann. “All of these formats can be easily run on existing packaging and print lines, and all offer full HD printing for high-impact graphics. The versatility and high standards of quality, consistency, and performance across our whole lidding film range marks it out as a clear industry leader for any food application.”
Parkside’s range of high-quality sustainable lidding films saw it pick up a prestigious FIAUK award for Sustainably Produced Packaging in 2022 – one of two awards it won on the night – for its collaboration with Riverford Organics. The winning pack – a tray for soft fruits – consisted of a pulp tray with a compostable lidding film, setting Parkside’s range of lidding films up for an even more successful 2023.
