Trio of innovative tech companies celebrate launch of new plastic packaging data standard, Open 3P, as it fuels innovation and unlocks collaboration.
Three women-led tech companies, Polytag, Greyparrot and Dsposal have heralded the launch of the Open 3P data standard as a game-changer for the packaging and waste industry. All three businesses use data to improve sustainability in the packaging supply chain and have said the standard will make it easier for their organisations to deliver more value to their customers quicker and drive innovation in the sector. The standard was launched by Sophie Walker, CEO of Dsposal, at the RECOUP Conference in Peterborough on 29th September 2022 during an all women session on Innovation, Leadership and the Future.
The Open 3P data standard has been developed as part of the Plastic Packaging Portals (PPP) project supported by Innovate UK’s Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging (SSPP) fund. The project, led by OPRL with partners Dsposal, Open Data Manchester CIC, RECOUP and Ecosurety has also been researching the feasibility of a data sharing platform built using the data standard to enable users along the packaging value chain to share packaging data with each other. This phase of the project finishes at the end of November and the partners are now seeking further funding to extend the data standard to all packaging materials and to bring the software platform to market.
Sophie Walker, said, “We’ve established from our research that there is a significant need for a new data sharing platform to connect up the packaging ecosystem to support stakeholders with meeting the new requirements of EPR, Plastics Tax, DRS and other reporting like the UK Plastics Pact. We have the technical expertise to build the platform but without an open data standard it would be impossible to make it work with the variety of users that need to share packaging data.
She continued, “It was an honour to launch the Open 3P data standard whose development has been led by our partners Open Data Manchester CIC. Collaboration is key if we’re to move to a more sustainable future and that there are so many other great businesses, like Greyparrot AI and Polytag, innovating in this space and using business as a force for good. Open 3P will enable us all to more easily integrate our services and deliver maximum impact to our users.”
Mikela Druckman, CEO and Founder of Greyparrot AI commented “Our solution empowers waste managers, producers and regulators with better data analytics. Packaging represents a huge amount of the waste our AI tracks and characterises. In order to increase transparency and automation in recycling, granular waste data needs to be accessible. Dsposal’s Open 3P standard and data sharing platform will provide the rich insights our clients need to increase recycling rates and reduce the cost of recovery.”
Alice Rackley, CEO of Polytag, added, “Open data standards are critical to enabling the kind of digital solutions we need to tackle the environmental challenges we face. Our unique ‘describe, tag and trace’ Polytag system gives brands and retailers access to never-before-seen data on packaging lifecycles and is already incorporating the Open 3P data standard. We’re excited to integrate with the new data sharing platform as this kind of collaborative approach unlocks so much value and potential to drive real change in the packaging sector.”
