Aran Group’s MonoFlex Bag-in-Box
MonoFlex, Aran’s new Bag-in-Box solution for liquid food products, has won the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) 2026 World Star Award, highlighting its contribution to sustainable, high-performance food packaging
Developed as a world-first fully recyclable high-barrier solution, MonoFlex sets a new benchmark for liquid food packaging by combining advanced material engineering with Design for Recycling principles. Made for packaging ranging from 3 to 20 liters, the MonoFlex Bag-in-Box is made from over 95% polyethylene (PE), incorporating a thin EVOH barrier layer.
High Performance Without Compromising Recyclability
This mono-material structure delivers excellent oxygen and moisture protection while maintaining full recyclability in standard PE recycling streams. By avoiding metallization and complex multilayer laminations commonly used in high-barrier packaging, MonoFlex overcomes a long-standing industry trade-off between performance and recyclability.
The packaging solution offers exceptional mechanical strength and puncture resistance, ensuring product integrity during long-distance transportation and extended storage. Its integrated fitment spout minimizes oxygen ingress during dispensing, preserving freshness and extending shelf life. This feature is particularly critical for oxygen-sensitive products such as wine, condiments, and other liquid foods, where quality degradation often leads to significant food waste.
Versatility Across Liquid Foods
MonoFlex has been successfully tested with a range of liquid food products, including wine, mayonnaise, and ketchup, demonstrating its versatility across food and beverage categories.
Sustainability and Efficiency
MonoFlex’s flexible design reduces packaging weight and volume compared to rigid containers, improving storage efficiency and lowering transportation-related emissions. By maintaining freshness for longer periods and enabling controlled dispensing, the bag helps prevent food loss and minimizes waste at both industrial and consumer levels. Aligned with European regulatory frameworks, MonoFlex achieves an “A” rating under the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). Its mono-PE construction supports source reduction, energy-efficient logistics, and end-of-life recovery, contributing to a lower carbon footprint and responsible resource use.
The WPO recognition positions MonoFlex as a practical, scalable solution for food producers seeking to meet rising sustainability expectations without compromising product protection or operational efficiency. By extending shelf life, limiting product spoilage, and enabling full recyclability, MonoFlex demonstrates how thoughtful packaging design can deliver measurable benefits for manufacturers, consumers, and the environment alike.
