Following the success of last year’s introduction of a 300g Bordeaux bottle to help reduce glass wastage and environmental impact, McGuigan Wines has partnered with Greencroft to bring a300g light weight Burgundy bottle to market. This represents a significant step forward in the BCorp brand’s commitment to reducing environmental impact.
The 300g lightweight Burgundy bottle is set to be rolled out across approximately 3.5 million bottles this year—equivalent to around 596k cases—and is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions from glass production by an estimated 82,000 kilograms annually. This initiative supports McGuigan Wines and its parent company, Australian Vintage’s, broader commitment to lowering carbon emissions across the global wine industry.
With a 25% reduction in bottle weight, and a corresponding decrease in production-related emissions, the innovation also empowers consumers to make more environmentally responsible choices without compromising on quality. Australian Vintage achieved B Corp certification in February 2024, becoming part of a global community of companies committed to building a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable economy. As a certified B Corp, the company meets rigorous standards for verified social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability – ensuring a balanced approach between commercial success and positive impact.
The wines will be packed at Greencroft Bottling, a state-of-the-art facility known for its commitment to renewable energy. Powered predominantly by wind and solar, including three wind turbines and a solar installation producing 4.6 megawatts of energy, Greencroft Bottling exemplifies sustainable manufacturing.
The 300g bottle, developed by Verallia, one of the world’s leading glass manufacturers, is made from approximately 30% recycled glass and is designed specifically for the wine sector. It maintains the iconic Burgundy aesthetic while achieving a 25% CO₂ reduction compared to the standard400g glass bottle traditionally used in the industry.
By introducing this innovative packaging solution ahead of the market, McGuigan Wines and Australian Vintage are strengthening their position as leaders in sustainable practices while responding to growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly products. This development represents an important milestone in lowering the environmental footprint of wine production, without compromising the high-quality standards for which McGuigan Wines is internationally recognised.
The McGuigan Wines Black Label Sauvignon Blanc in the new 300g lightweight Burgundy bottle is available in Sainsbury’s with a RRP of £7.50.
