Following the success of its inaugural programme in 2021, ESTAL, Avery Dennison and KURZ have launched the second year of their annual design collaboration platform, Make a Mark. The programme aims to accelerate innovation and sustainable solutions in luxury packaging design.
Guided by the overarching brief of ‘progressive design at the intersection of sustainability, luxury and innovation’, Make a Mark calls on the world’s most creative and disruptive thinkers to envision and reimagine the future of luxury packaging in the Drinks, Wine and Spirits and Beauty and Fragrance categories.
The programme features twenty renowned designers from across the world who have submitted new concepts, which have been transformed into physical prototypes using glass from ESTAL, labeling materials from Avery Dennison and printing tools and embellishments from KURZ. The programme calls for ideas that encourage positive societal change, including responses to the climate crisis, without compromising product stand out on shelf. Designers have been given access to the industry’s latest developments and up-to-date packaging technologies and were encouraged to think without cost and technological constraints to push their creativity further and break new ground in packaging innovation.
The creative concepts and prototypes will be unveiled at Luxe Pack Monaco from the 3rd to the 5th of October 2022 before being displayed across the world via exhibitions and a stunning special-edition book.
Last year’s concepts included the use of eco-friendly materials and technological solutions such as ESTAL Wild Glass made of 100% recycled post-consumer waste glass. Leveraging the growing trend for packaging that delivers a high-end experience with a premium look, finish and feel that are manufactured from sustainable materials, some concepts used Avery Dennison Fasson® Cotton Black, an extra premium eco-friendly paper made from 100% Cotton fibers. For embellishment, the creatives used a variety of techniques from KURZ including ’s gold decoration layers, which are the thinnest on the market as well as being recyclable and compostable.
Gerard Albertí, ESTAL’s CEO, comments: “We are working intensively in this second Make a Mark edition. The creativity generated by the world’s top packaging designers is absolutely incredible.”
Vladimir Tyulpin, Avery Dennison’s Market Segment Leader for Wine & Spirits says: “The 2021 Make a Mark programme propelled the luxury industry forward when it comes to how they think about sustainable design, so we’re extremely excited to unveil what this year’s designers have developed. In a landscape of disruptive technologies, evolving lifestyles and fast-growing concern for climate change, design can be the driving force for positive change and the Make a Mark programme is an incredible platform for the design community to collaborate and accelerate innovation.”
“Stéphane Royère, Head of Business Area Packaging and Print at KURZ, adds: “The first edition of Make a Mark was an ambitious showcase of new ideas, proving that creativity has no limits. The second edition for 2022 follows this high level of ingeniousness. Make a Mark is the ideal platform for brands to get further inspiration for their products to make a difference on the shelf while decreasing the environmental impact of their packaging. The best part is that we are able to move beyond design concepts and mock-ups to production, proving the feasibility of the designs for brands.”
