Grimsby-based packaging expert, Lindum has uncovered a major widespread issue in the hand pallet wrap industry, revealing that an alarming 91% of rolls are short-wound - meaning businesses may not get what they paid for.
To tackle the issue and provide greater transparency for logistics professionals, Lindum has developed an innovative digital roll-length counter. Designed to measure the exact length of pallet wrap on a roll, Lindum can take this information and compare it directly with what is stated by the manufacturer, to provide businesses and logistics professionals complete transparency.
Hand pallet wrap is typically sold in specific roll lengths, including 300 and 600 metres. However, following the extensive testing of 67 rolls from 65 different suppliers, it was found that, on average, rolls were 10% shorter than advertised. This means that a 600m roll may only contain just 540m, leading to increased costs for logistics professionals.
Besides the cost implications, short winding has a significant impact on overall sustainability goals and compliance with the UK Plastic Packaging Tax.
With businesses receiving less plastic wrap per roll than advertised, they require additional rolls to wrap the same number of pallets, meaning more plastic is consumed overall which could result in more tax being paid on additional rolls.
Lindum’s digital length counter is designed to measure the exact length of pallet wrap on a roll, compared to what is stated by the manufacturer, so businesses across the UK have complete transparency on what they’re purchasing.
"When it comes to hand-wrap, many companies trust that they are getting what they have paid for, but our research shows that short winding is a serious and surprisingly common issue." Says Rick Sellars, Sales Manager at Lindum.
“Over three months, we tested approximately 67 rolls from 65 different suppliers across the UK to measure the actual amount of wrap on the roll vs the estimation.
“As a company that prides itself on being fully transparent with customers, we hold ourselves to the same standard we expect from others, which is why we developed this digital tool to help businesses ensure they are receiving the full value of their order. It works by measuring exactly how many metres are on a roll, so we can compare that to what is stated by the manufacturer.”
Lindum is now offering businesses the chance to test their own pallet wrap rolls using this new technology. Any company concerned about short-winding can send a roll to Lindum for testing - or even request an on-site verification.
