A consortium of innovative Dutch companies has successfully completed the multi-year Clean Cups development project. The project focused on the development of a home-compostable coffee capsule for Nespresso® systems and resulted in significant technological breakthroughs, functional prototypes, and valuable knowledge in the field of sustainable packaging solutions.
The project was carried out by M-Plastics B.V., Hemcell Resins B.V., and Euro-Caps B.V., with support from the EFRO East Netherlands programme.
The objective of Clean Cups was to develop a sustainable alternative to conventional coffee capsules using home-compostable materials. At the start of the project, the partners identified opportunities to create innovative packaging solutions aligned with the growing demand for circular materials and sustainable product concepts.
During the development process, the consortium successfully produced functional coffee capsules from a range of innovative raw materials. The capsules met the key technical requirements and were shown to perform effectively in standard single-serve coffee machines, including requirements related to puncturability, sealing performance, and coffee extraction.
In addition, extensive practical testing demonstrated that large-scale production is feasible using CCM technology, representing an important step toward industrial implementation. As a result, the project's primary research and development objectives were successfully achieved.
The Clean Cups project not only delivered functional prototypes but also generated new insights into compostable materials, product development, and circular packaging solutions. This knowledge provides a valuable foundation for future innovations within the circular economy.
During the course of the project, however, market and regulatory conditions evolved differently than anticipated at the outset. Based on these changing circumstances, the project partners jointly decided not to proceed with the commercialisation of the developed coffee capsule at this time. Should the regulatory framework evolve more favourably in the future, commercial scale-up remains a viable possibility.
According to the consortium, this decision highlights the importance of combining innovation with responsible entrepreneurship. While technical feasibility is a key prerequisite for success, sustainable market introduction also requires sufficient economic viability and favourable market conditions.
Despite the decision not to pursue this specific product further, the participating companies remain committed to investing in the development of sustainable materials, circular products, and innovative manufacturing processes.
