Innovation Forum’s Future of Plastics and Packaging Conference returns to Amsterdam this year on 3rd-4th October. Over the two days, key industry players will gather to debate sustainable packaging solutions that work for consumers, the environment and business, across the supply chain. IGD’s Head of Sustainability and Sustainability Programme Manager, Fiona Powell and Natasha Maynard (respectively) will be travelling from the UK to be present at the conference.
As a nation, The Netherlands has been at the forefront of reducing plastic waste and pollution. There are ongoing developments in enforcing a single-use plastics ban and its capital, Amsterdam became the first city to join WWF’s Plastic Smart Cities Initiative in 2019 to reduce 30% of its plastic pollution. A Dutch startup, The Great Bubble Barrier recently charted innovation in plastic pollution river management using bubble curtains to capture plastic before it reaches the North Sea.
Advocating for this progress in plastic recycling and sustainable packaging, the conference aims to unpack the key issues within the plastics industry globally, with senior representatives from the Netherlands, Europe and beyond.
Joined by the UK sustainable packaging lead at Anthesis, Sophie Lee-Millais, Powell will be discussing the vital issue of how to measure, manage and truly understand the impact of your sustainable packaging strategy. As Head of Sustainability, Powell aims to provide insight into corporate sustainable packaging practices including recent developments in corporate strategies within Europe. In working with industry to develop the Ambition to halve the environmental impacts of packaging in the UK by 2030, IGD challenges the value chain to consider all packaging materials and broad environmental impacts.
Recently, there have been initiatives to reduce plastic packaging for business and consumers, with major food retailers trialling reuse and refill schemes. With a strong focus on reuse and refill systems, and consumer research, Maynard will be joining the conversation to reflect on these retail reuse-refill schemes and how to measure the impact and scalability of these initiatives.
Alongside IGD, senior representatives from the likes of Nestlé, Kraft Heinz, Henkel, Unilever, European Circular Bioeconomy Fund and many more will be present at the conference.
