It’s Wednesday! We’re in the middle of the week and with more exclusive content coming to you from SPN, it’s only going to get better.
Yesterday we spoke about businesses which are educating and children with sustainability (whilst making it fun of course!) and a new business which was making food packaging out of onion skins. Today we talk to you about, not only, but two pieces of exclusive content which has been provided to us from BioPak (thank you very much!).
We have seen from BioPak that DEFRA’s cancellation of the mandatory takeback scheme for single-use paper cups has sparked a broader conversation about sustainable food packaging. Traditional recycling methods have struggled with the challenges of multi-material construction and food contamination, leading to very low recycling rates, which has prompted industry leaders like BioPak’s Global Head of Sustainability, Lea Maguero, to call for a revaluation of current practices.
Maguero argues that certified compostable packaging offers a more effective and circular solution, as it can be processed alongside food waste to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve soil health, and streamline waste management by eliminating the need for complex recycling systems. However, we are all aware that this is never as easy as it seems and achieving this vision will require robust regulations, regular testing, infrastructure investments and comprehensive education for not only the consumer, but the industry too.
However, this is not impossible. I say this a lot, but I see these obstacles as a chance to better the product as well as the process of manufacturing it too. If we thought that it was perfect, we would have nothing to aim for and therefore I see this, not as a big wall which isn’t going anywhere, but a big wall that we are bulldozing down to create space for products and materials which are going to help our planet.
That comes to the end of my exclusive content piece for today, come back to the SPN website for more exclusive content tomorrow.
Let’s be more sustainable. Together.
