As you cross the River Kent in Burneside, the old schoolhouse comes into view. Once a place of traditional learning, it is now home to a new kind of education.
Just upstream, the mill carries forward a legacy that began in the 19th Century, when it became one of the first in the world to manufacture coloured paper using synthetic dyes. That quiet innovation in 1856 marked the beginning of a long relationship with colour, craft, and considered change.
Today, James Cropper is still renowned for its bespoke coloured paper, but also for reinventing the fibres of the past into materials for the future. There's a certain rhythm, or a kind of organic transmission, in how knowledge, technique, and material are passed on. Like fibres suspended in water, reformed and repurposed, each generation shapes traditional art forms anew.
Colour speaks first
Every colour carries a voice, a presence, a feeling. It shapes perception before a word is spoken, drawing from history, nature, and emotion to evoke something deeply personal. Colour speaks in ways words cannot, creating an immediate connection that resonates long after the initial glance. In the world of premium packaging, colour is more than just a design choice and is an identity, a symbol that conveys the brand's essence.
Whether it's the deep heritage of a rich navy, the quiet confidence of a muted taupe, or the daring edge of a fiery red, each shade tells a story beyond the visual. These colours have power - they can calm, inspire, excite, or provoke. The right colour doesn't just sit on the surface; it becomes embedded in the emotions and experiences of those who encounter it. It is not merely seen, it's felt, remembered, and forever linked to the brand bold enough to own it.
Whether it's the calm authority of a deep charcoal against a vibrant pop of colour, or the sophisticated blend of light and dark tones, these contrasts influence how people perceive a brand or experience a product. The ability to strategically use colour to shape such interactions is a powerful tool, and we embrace it fully at James Cropper.
Although colour psychology frequently seems intuitive, data-backed findings give it credibility. According to research by the Pantone Colour Institute, people subconsciously judge a product within 90 seconds, and up to 90% of that judgment is based solely on colour. This statistic highlights colour's immense power in shaping first impressions and influencing consumer decision-making. Whether it's the quiet authority of charcoal or the bold impact of crimson, colour shapes how we perceive, respond to, and remember brands.
At James Cropper, colour is not just seen but felt, experienced, and remembered. It is the first thing your audience notices and the last thing they forget. We believe every hue tells a story, and our craft is helping brands tell theirs with unmistakable clarity and purpose.
Generations of precision in every shade
Our time-honoured process, honed over generations, ensures that the first 'lab match' sheet is just the beginning of a meticulous journey that guarantees the quality and consistency of your colour, from the initial concept to large-scale production and final product, time and again.
We craft more than 1,000 unique papers annually, exploring a colour spectrum that spans 184 distinct blacks to 62 nuanced whites, and thousands of shades in between. Each one is more than a pigment - it's a narrative. A carefully developed expression of a brand's essence, crafted by masters who understand the profound impact a single shade can have.
Our team of colour experts constantly tests and refines their vision to ensure unmatched accuracy and judgement. Working in tandem with cutting-edge technology, the trained human eye accelerates development while delivering exceptional precision and consistency. Whether it's a specific lipstick shade or the hue of a historic brick, our library of 2,000+ live shades and 200,000 digital colour recipes enables us to capture brand colour with emotional impact and technical exactness.
Colour can be derived from dye, pigment, or a precise blend of both with distinct properties. Dyes are absorbed into paper fibres, producing vibrant, translucent tones. Pigments sit on the surface, offering rich, opaque depth. Mastering the interplay between the two is key to achieving aesthetic and functional excellence.
This balance is central to our colour creation process. Every decision – from the type and concentration of colourant to its compatibility with the material – ensures your colour looks beautiful and endures. It must withstand light, handling, and real-world use, retaining its brilliance.
A match made in Kendal
A prime showcase of our colour expertise is the Coloursource collection, a curated portfolio of 50 signature shades available in nine weights and 36 embossed patterns. Drawing on almost 170 years of experience as pioneers in coloured paper, Coloursource allows brands to bring their creative vision to life with precision and vibrancy. Whether selecting a timeless shade or creating a bespoke hue, our expert colour technicians combine decades of knowledge with a market-leading colour matching service to deliver the perfect result, ensuring every design makes a lasting impression.
One of James Cropper’s most recognisable projects is also one of the most demanding when it comes to colour performance: the Royal British Legion’s paper poppies. Each poppy must match a specific shade of red, a deep, vivid hue that holds enormous symbolic weight, as well as a particular green for the leaf. But matching the colour is only part of the challenge.
The red dye must also be carefully formulated to resist colour bleed, as the poppies are traditionally worn outdoors throughout wet British Novembers. That means the paper must be both water-resistant and colourfast, holding its shade without bleeding onto clothing or fading in poor weather.
This commitment to precision is also evident in the revival of Kendal Green, a historic colour once used to dye cloth worn at the Battle of Agincourt and later referenced by Shakespeare. Though no physical sample remained, our team identified the original pigments, woad and dyer's broom, and recreated the shade using papermaking dyes through our Tailor Made process. The result was a fully authentic colour, brought back to life in bespoke packaging and stationery - a powerful example of how James Cropper blends heritage, innovation and technical mastery in every shade.
For Burberry, we precisely matched the iconic trench coat hue – a colour deeply embedded in the brand's heritage – ensuring the packaging reflected the same timeless elegance. Similarly, Swarovski partnered with us to develop 10 bespoke paper shades inspired by high-performance Formula 1 fabrics, blending luxury with innovation.
Yet, perhaps the most striking example of how colour can elevate a brand is our work with Waldorf Astoria New York. As part of a monumental restoration, Noë & Associates challenged us to capture the essence of the hotel's history, particularly the iconic Waldorf Grey brick that adorned the building. Through careful analysis and research, our colour technicians reverse-engineered this shade, custom-made for the hotel in 1929. By collaborating with architects and designers, we translated this colour into bespoke paper products, preserving the hotel's timeless elegance in every sheet.
These examples go beyond simply matching colours; they capture a piece of history, infusing it into a brand's experience.
