This year’s World Environment Day theme shines a spotlight on one of the most pressing challenges of our time: the extensive use of fossil-based plastics packaging. It brings people together across the globe to raise awareness, inspire action, and promote collective efforts to reduce plastic waste and protect our planet.
Recent consumer data confirms that climate change remains a top concern for consumers across Europe, with 62% of respondents identifying it as an increasing concern (Pro Carton’s Packaging Perceptions Consumer Survey 2025). Our survey also revealed that the majority (62%) of respondents are recycling more, while more than a third (38%) are actively reducing their purchases of plastic-packaged products. This demonstrates a clear demand for more sustainable packaging alternatives in the wake of climate change.
This World Environment Day, we are reminded that sustainability begins with design, sourcing and responsible material choices, where the packaging industry has an influential role to play. Fibre-based packaging is a proven solution and a natural leader in circulaity. Cartonboard originates from renewable resources and with 83 % recycling rate, is one of the most recycled materials in Europe.
European resilience is rooted in the ability to foster sustainable industries that support environmental goals. With more than 90% of raw materials for cartonboard sourced from sustainably managed European forests, the fibre-based packaging sector contributes to the circular economy. This bioeconomy not only supports recycling and responsible consumption but also generates high-quality, future-oriented jobs across Europe. By driving innovation in renewable materials and closing the loop through successful recycling systems, Europe is paving the way for a resilient, self-sufficient economy that aligns environmental responsibility with industrial strength.
Pro Carton celebrates the strides the packaging industry and consumers have already made to contribute to a more sustainable future. However, we call for greater industry collaboration to accelerate the shift toward renewable, recyclable packaging materials.
Pro Carton continues to promote practices that support circular packaging systems and advocates for the reduction in plastic use to create a more sustainable future. For more, visit www.procarton.com
