Tata Steel UK – Packaging will showcase the future of sustainable steelmaking at two key industry shows: LIVE 2025: Retail Week & The Grocer (11 February) the UK's leading event for retailers and FMCG brands as well as at Packaging Innovations, NEC Birmingham (13 February).
Tata Steel launches its new Electrifying Packaging Steel campaign, which underscores the company's commitment to decarbonising steel production for the packaging sector using Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology.
On stand at LIVE 2025, delegates can experience a cutting-edge virtual reality tour of Tata Steel UK's EAF set to produce packaging steel by 2030.
While at Packaging Innovations, Tata Steel’s Nick Silk, Head of Product Development and Customer Technical Support and Sarah Passmore, Head of Commercial Strategy, Packaging will present ‘Electrifying Packaging Steel’ on 13 February, 1.30pm on the Manufacturing and Supply Chain stage.
This pioneering EAF process will produce high-grade steel with the same exceptional quality, formability, and AA+ food safety standards as traditional methods, making it ideal for packaging everyday products like baked beans, aerosols, and paint cans.
"Electrifying packaging steel production is a vital step toward a greener future," explains Adrian Davies, Marketing Manager - Packaging, Tata Steel UK. "EAF technology significantly cuts carbon emissions while delivering the same high-quality, food-safe steel that brands and consumers trust. This innovation helps retailers and FMCG brands meet sustainability targets and aligns with the growing demand for responsible packaging solutions."
Nicola Jones, Steel Packaging Recycling Manager at Tata Steel UK, adds: "Our EAF technology will enable the production of packaging steel with 50% lower CO₂ emissions in packaging steel, and at least 50% recycled content. At our Trostre site, where steel is crafted for essential products like food, drink, and aerosol cans, we're committed to advancing a truly circular economy."
Tata Steel's transformation to EAF technology at Port Talbot marks a major shift for the UK's packaging sector. Unlike traditional blast furnaces, EAFs use electrical energy to melt scrap steel, allowing a significant increase in recycled content and a step change in emissions. The move supports local recycling, tackling the UK's current export of 8 million tonnes of steel scrap annually and contributing to a circular economy for steel.
“Join Tata Steel UK at its Tech Pod in the Networking Area of LIVE:2025, for the launch of Electrifying Packaging Steel and a first-hand look at how sustainable steelmaking is shaping the future of packaging. Alternatively, meet our colleagues at Packaging Innovations for their insightful presentation on the future of EAF packaging steel on 13 February,” concludes Nicola.
Nicola Jones and Adrian Davies will be on hand at LIVE 2025 to discuss how this innovation supports retail and FMCG brands in achieving their sustainability goals.
