Cosmetics Europe and Close the Glass Loop are proud to announce that Cosmetics Europe is becoming today the 15th European partner of Close the Glass Loop, reinforcing the commitment of the whole glass packaging value chain to achieve 90% glass collection for recycling in the EU by 2030.
Packaging plays a key role in making sure cosmetic and personal care products reach consumers in the best possible condition, keeping products safe, usable for longer and carrying important and extensive mandatory information. It also builds brand identity and product differentiation. In the cosmetics sector, glass bottles and jars are used for products such as perfumes, creams, balms, body lotions, as well as make-up or nail varnishes.
While this segment represents a limited share of the glass packaging placed on the market, it is nevertheless a distinctive category of products that are typically consumed in the bathroom and not – like most other products packed in glass – in the kitchen. As was discussed in a recent episode of the web series “90 Minutes to Close the Loop” dedicated to bathroom glass, this requires targeted measures to ensure that consumers understand that all glass packaging can be collected separately.

Through this partnership, members of Cosmetics Europe will work hand in hand with the national platforms of Close the Glass Loop, who are currently operating in 13 countries across Europe, to share best practices and bring about operational and practical solutions to increase the collection and recycling of cosmetics packed in glass. They will also support the implementation of Close the Glass Loop’s Roadmap to Optimise the Closed Loop Recycling of Glass Packaging, for instance in terms of design guidelines or to maximise the uptake of recycled content.
“We are excited to kickstart our collaboration with Cosmetics Europe to foster further collection and recycling of glass cosmetic packaging, and make more recycled glass available to manufacture new glass containers. Closed loop recycling can only work with a strong value chain approach”, added Carlo Pirrone, Secretary General of FEVE – the European Container Glass Federation, on behalf of Close the Glass Loop partners.
