‘The move away from plastic to recycled cardboard and the unconventional packaging design has gone down very well with our customers, aligning with our marketing campaign narrative," explains Continental's product manager Alexander Hänke. With the new packaging, Continental is taking another step closer to the goal of circular economy with closed resource cycles as part of its comprehensive sustainability strategy.
Six of the best
Literally a sensational product, the cut out windows on the front of each pack invite cyclists not just to see but also to touch the product without having to open the packaging. This reassures riders that the quality and construction of the tyre they are choosing will suit their individual needs and riding conditions.
Inspired by the Continental branding, the distinctive packaging is hexagonal shaped with striking black graphics. A practical handle is also integrated into the design, allowing the tyres to be presented on shelf or on Eurohook, as well as making them more convenient to carry home.
Complex – yet so simple
Although complex folding and gluing is needed to ensure that the minimum possible amount of material is used to produce each pack, these processes could be automated. The resulting packaging is therefore cost-efficient, yet quick to assemble and fill – and it can be stacked easily despite the eye-catching shape. This packaging design can also be used for any tyre in the range.
Double award for sustainability
Produced by STI Group's Hungarian plant in Kecskemét, this packaging solution for Continental has won two awards thanks to its creative use of fibre-based material to replace plastic. Having beaten 61 other entries to win the HUNGAROPACK 2022 Sustainability Award, it further impressed the Worldstar jury with its sustainable credentials. Worldstar Awards are to be presented at Interpack in Düsseldorf on 6 May 2023.
