With the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), the packaging industry is entering a new era. Europe has set a clear direction for the future: less waste, greater circularity, and packaging that works within real recycling systems.
The regulation's becomes applicable on August 12, 2026, but that date is not the finish line. It is the starting point of a transition that will continue to develop over the coming years. At Constantia Flexibles, we have spent more than a decade preparing for this moment, and now we are at the starting line. Many requirements will be introduced gradually, while additional guidance and technical details are still being defined. Given that the final framework has not yet been fully established, no company can reasonably claim to be fully ready today.
What companies can do, however, is prepare
At Constantia Flexibles, that is exactly what we mean when we say we are PPWR ready from day one. The statement reflects the work we have undertaken to align our portfolio, processes, and expertise with the direction of the regulation. It does not imply full compliance with future requirements that are still being defined.
Long before PPWR entered into force, we integrated Design for Recycling principles and circular thinking into the way we develop packaging solutions. For us, this is not a new direction or a reaction to changing regulations. It is part of how we work and how we support our customers every day.

Companies increasingly need access to reliable data, including Product Carbon Footprints (PCF), recycled content information, and recyclability assessments. At the same time, packaging must continue to protect products, run reliably on existing production lines, and meet operational requirements.

Our goal is simple: help identify the right solution for each application. Within PPWR readiness, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. The right solution depends on the product, the packaging format, the production setup, and the market where it will be used.

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding PPWR is the belief that there will be one preferred material for every application, but the reality is different. Material selection remains application-specific, and it depends on many factors, including product protection, line performance, regulatory requirements, and market conditions.
