Let’s start with the basics — many consumers are drawn to labels like "clean," "natural," and "sustainable," but often don’t fully understand them. How do you define these terms, and how are they different from one another?
For us, "clean” means products free from synthetic chemicals, prioritizing natural and plant-based sources. Our official definition of Natural is: a formula composed of non-GMO plant, mineral, marine, and/or animal ingredients that do not contain petrochemicals and are physically or chemically processed without the use of petrochemicals. And we believe "sustainable" goes beyond the product itself; it includes ethical sourcing, eco-friendly packaging, and a responsible supply chain.
It can be very confusing for customers, especially when these terms are so often used interchangeably. However, each one represents a unique aspect of our larger commitment to creating products that are considerate of both people and the environment.
Why do you think there’s still so much confusion in the market around clean beauty claims? Is this more of a branding issue or a regulatory one?
There is an inconsistency of regulations (or lack thereof) across regions around the world. In the US there is not even a defined standard resulting from an alignment between formulators, regulatory affairs and consumer advocacy groups.
As a result, each brand or retailer is left to set their own guidelines as to what "clean" means to them, and how they wish to exist in that space. With this overload of information and despite best intent from all parties involved, it has led to some confusion, especially for consumers. Without clear guidelines, it becomes hard for consumers to understand what they're getting and who to trust based on their individual aspirations as well. As there are different drivers that motivate any given consumer to seek a natural or "clean" product.
That’s why transparency is so important — we believe people deserve to know exactly what they’re putting on their skin not just what’s left out. The "clean" space tends to emphasize the ingredients that are not used and leans into a minimalist approach to formulation. We on the other end, are total maximalists: we think consumers should buy a product for what's in it and we tend to address multiple skin benefits with more than one ingredient in each product we commercialize.
Lastly consumers also deserve to have visibility on the practices surrounding sourcing and processing of ingredients, packaging materials, and formulating and manufacturing practices, which is why we have chosen ECOCERT certification to the COSMOS Standards.
Can you walk us through what ECOCERT certification really means, and why it’s considered the gold standard for natural and organic cosmetic certification?
ECOCERT is the certification body that certifies us to the international COSMOS Standards. These rigorous standards cover all aspects of the products from the ingredients all the way to the end product. Raw materials must meet the natural and organic requirements, use natural resources responsibly, respect biodiversity, be absent of GMO and petrochemicals. But it’s not just about the ingredients—it also standardizes the calculation of natural and organic content in the formulas, and requires us to manufacture, and package our products, in a way that is respectful to the environment.
This certification is considered the gold standard because it holds us accountable to high levels of transparency and responsibility. For our customers, the ECOCERT label guarantees that every step involved in the making of our products is subject to consistent standards that are validated through auditing and certification.
Additionally our facility (where we receive our ingredients, formulate, batch, fill, assemble and dispatch our products from) is also certified by ECOCERT.
How does ECOCERT differ from other common certifications like Cruelty Free, Made Safe, or Certified Vegan? What makes it more comprehensive?
ECOCERT is different from certifications like Cruelty-Free, Made Safe, or Certified Vegan because it looks at the bigger picture. While Cruelty-Free ensures no animal testing, COSMOS Standards also prohibit products from being tested on animals. While Vegan confirms no animal ingredients, ECOCERT and COSMOS Standards allow ingredients of animal origin only if the animal is not harmed. It covers everything from how our ingredients are sourced and grown, to how the product is manufactured, packaged and labeled.
It ensures that every product is not only natural and includes a specified amount of organic ingredients, but it is also created with strict environmental considerations, from ingredient sourcing through manufacturing. While other certifications focus on one aspect, ECOCERT takes a more comprehensive approach.
What do you believe is the biggest misconception consumers have when it comes to the environmental impact of their beauty products?
We think one of the biggest misconceptions is that it’s only about what’s in the bottle. Of course, choosing natural and organic ingredients is important, but how these ingredients are grown, harvested and processed is just as important. How the products are made, in what materials they are contained is also very important
Another misconception is that natural products aren’t as effective as products with conventional ingredients. Natural ingredients can be used to achieve skin results. At Tata Harper we rely on the best sources for our ingredients which are processed through cutting-edge science. The way we formulate is distinct to us and our formulas are not shared with any other brand.
How does Tata Harper Skincare ensure that its formulations and packaging not only meet but exceed ECOCERT standards?
By combining eco-friendly practices with high-performance products, we maintain our commitment to both sustainability and efficacy While ECOCERT and COSMOS Standards do allow some non-natural ingredients we do not use any in our products. We require ingredients to be 100% natural according to COSMOS Standards to be used in Tata Harper products.
For packaging, we prioritize glass for its infinite recyclability.. We use FSC® Certified paper from responsible forestry to produce our cartons. , We are committed to sustainability not just abiding by standards for the sake of the certificate.
You mention that Tata Harper focuses more on what’s in the product rather than what’s not. Can you elaborate on that product development philosophy?
We prioritize what’s in the product by focusing on potent, natural ingredients that deliver real results. Our philosophy is centered around using multiple high-quality actives at uniquely formulated to target multiple skin concerns at once. We tend to address multiple skin benefits with more than one ingredient in each product we commercialize.
Instead of just using ingredients that are less than optimal, we aim to formulate products that are rich in beneficial, effective elements, ensuring each product is both clean and highly effective. We highlight the beautiful ingredients that make our products, rather than cherry-picking which to advocate against and hiding the ones actually used.
In an industry where buzzwords dominate, how do you communicate your brand’s authenticity and ingredient integrity to consumers in a transparent and effective way?
Transparency is really important to us, which is why we make sure our customers know the full story behind every product. We share detailed information about each ingredient, why it's included, and the benefits it offers. Rather than relying on buzzwords, we let our products speak for themselves through real, visible results.
Third-party certifications like ECOCERT further validate our commitment to authenticity, helping consumers trust that we always prioritize integrity in both our ingredients and processes.
What role do you believe consumer education should play in the future of the clean beauty movement? And how is Tata Harper contributing to that education?
Clean beauty is important for the environment and the individual, which makes education on how to identify it so important. It’s incredibly rewarding to empower customers with the knowledge they need, so they can confidently choose products that truly care for their skin. We contribute to this education by providing clear, accessible information about our ingredients, sourcing, and the science behind our formulations. By helping consumers understand the benefits of natural, high-performance skincare, we aim to raise the standard for clean beauty and encourage a more thoughtful approach to product selection.
Looking ahead, how do you see certification standards and brand accountability evolving — especially as sustainability becomes a larger focus globally?
As consumers become more informed and sustainable options continue to grow, the pressure is on for brands to do more than just meet minimum standards - real trust comes from real accountability. We’ve been dedicated to leading by example since day one of the brand, consistently holding ourselves to the highest standards to ensure our practices stay in step with the growing global focus on sustainability.
Also as consumers become more educated we are hoping they can become more active in demanding better policies and regulations from their localities and elected officials, to support and promote products and practices that are more considerate of both human health and environmental health.
