Carton Service is a member of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition and certified through the Forest Stewardship Council, which ensures our raw materials come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits.
We focus our sustainability efforts in four primary areas: employing more efficient production processes, reducing our carbon footprint, protecting biodiversity, and contributing to a circular economy.
Over the course of the last year, in addition to leading a number of international brands from 3-ply corrugated materials to single-sheet substrates, we acquired two patents, both of which create a circular bioeconomy in packaging markets traditionally dominated by plastics.
U.S. Patent No. 11,383,474 B2: A new way of installing transparent windows in gable-top food cartons. Previously, methods for manufacturing such cartons used adhesive applications that compromised the containers by allowing the adhesive to come into contact with the food inside. Our solution helps eliminate the possibility of food contamination and thereby reduces reliance on plastic containers for such see-through applications by generating a transparent display window without the need for a heat- or flame-sealing process.
U.S. Patent 11,472,594 B2: A new paper-based liquid container designed with a unique closure that effectively prevents leaching. Our process makes it possible to store viscous liquids like soaps, shampoos, and detergents in wet indoor or outdoor environments without affecting the contents inside. This is accomplished through a new method of sealing the container that eliminates raw edges, making this a real opportunity to replace plastic containers with paper ones.
About Carton Service: Carton Service is a U.S.-based third-generation family-owned business. As a leading retail and food packaging supplier, we are committed to staying at the forefront of our industry through cutting-edge innovations and eco-friendly packaging solutions.
About the Sustainable Packaging Coalition: The Sustainable Packaging Coalition is a membership-based collaborative that believes in the power of the industry to make packaging more sustainable. To meet its criteria, packaging must:
- Be beneficial, safe, and healthy for individuals and communities throughout its lifecycle.
- Be sourced, manufactured, transported, and recycled using renewable energy.
- Optimize the use of renewable or recycled source materials.
- Be manufactured using clean production technologies.
- Be designed to optimize materials and energy.
- Be recovered and used in closed-loop cycles.
About FSC Certification: To become FSC certified, a packaging company must demonstrate that all materials used to produce their products come from sources that comply with all FSC standards. The FSC promotes:
- Zero Deforestation: FSC-certified forests are CO2 neutral, as trees are harvested at a replaceable rate, which prevents the net loss of forests over time. The FSC also protects high-value conservation (HVC) forests.
- Labor Rights: FSC requires that workers in FSC-certified forests be properly trained, fairly paid, protected by appropriate safety measures, and free to join trade unions.
- Biodiversity Preservation: FSC engages in the protection of endangered plant and animal species.
- Community Rights: FSC requires that companies consult local populations before undertaking any forestry work and uphold all indigenous legal and cultural rights to the land and resources."
