BioPak is a company that prioritises sustainable sourcing of plant-based materials to manufacture our products. We strive to replace plastic-lined coffee cups with bioplastic-lined paper cups, and our design team works according to circular economy principles. Our raw materials are selected carefully to ensure they have less of an environmental impact than other finite resources and are quickly renewable. We use industry tools and standards, like Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), to investigate the effects of materials on the environment and choose the best options.
Compostable food service packaging is the best option due to the high contamination levels from food waste, the presence of composite materials, and the small size of individual items. The majority of our products are certified either industrially or home compostable to Australian and European standards and can be turned into nutrient-rich compost along with food scraps.
Our materials are certified by independent third-party auditors to ensure responsible sourcing from controlled sources and traceability. These certifications demonstrate our commitment to quality, safety, and sustainability by adhering to regulated, robust standards.
BioPak's Ingeo bioplastic lining is made from plants and is one of the best alternatives to conventional plastic coating made from fossil fuel. Unlike other packaging companies that incorrectly market their cups as recyclable in the paper recycling stream, we recognise that the invisible plastic lining cannot be removed, so we choose plant-based alternatives suitable for industrial composting and invest in local composting initiatives to ensure responsible disposal.
We are constantly looking to improve our sustainability efforts and have invested heavily in R&D for Aqueous – an even better alternative to PLA bioplastic lining. Aqueous is dispersion-coated onto the paper, meaning it does not delaminate or get affected by direct heat. We are proud to announce that our Aqueous BioCups have just received home compost certification (AS5810) in Australia, meaning when paired with our sugarcane lids, consumers will have a completely home compostable coffee cup.
We encourage our customers to switch to our home compostable sugarcane pulp lids for our hot and cold cups and move away from industrially compostable CPLA lids and soon-to-be-banned PS (conventional plastic) lids. We are also launching a range of plant fibre-based cutlery, which means we can offer two alternatives to single-use plastic cutlery along with our FSC certified birchwood cutlery.
