Berry Global will showcase its wide variety of sustainable and circular plastic packaging solutions for the food industry at this year’s CFIA Rennes exhibition, the benchmark for the agri-food industry, which takes place 4th to 6th March at the Parc Expo, Rennes, France.
The wide variety of products on display on Stand 9-B28 demonstrates the many options available to help brands achieve circularity, including packs that can be reused and easily recycled, that allow the incorporation of recycled plastic and renewable materials in the production mix, and which are lightweighted and offer improved recyclability.
With a special focus on food safety at this year’s exhibition, Berry will also highlight plastic packaging’s key role in providing effective product protection and extended shelf-life.
“We continue to work with our customers in the drive towards a circular, net zero economy,” said Isabelle Rival, Area Sales & Key Account Manager, France, Berry CPI Food, Beverage, and Specialities.
“At CFIA Rennes, we will demonstrate ways in which we can achieve this while still devising solutions that meet other essential requirements for food packaging. As well as safety, these include functionality, consumer convenience, aesthetics, and branding.”
Highlights on the stand include Berry’s new range of reusable cups; lightweighted food containers, including those with recycled plastic and enhanced recyclability; and Berry’s high-quality CleanStream® recycled plastic for contact sensitive applications.
Berry’s new range of reusable cups meets increasing demand for alternative solutions to single-use packaging. Ideal for both on-site and takeaway requirements, they combine reusability with a premium quality feel and high-impact branding opportunities. They are dishwasher safe, lightweight but exceptionally durable, and can be recycled when they finally reach their end of life, where appropriate recycling facilities exist.
The wide choice of containers available for food and non-food use include initiatives such as lightweighting, the incorporation of recycled plastic, and the inclusion of robust plastic handles, which provides a mono-material pack solution for easier recycling.
Another solution for improved recycling on show is Berry’s range of non-carbon black packaging. Unlike traditional carbon black, this type of packaging can be detected by Near Infra-Red (NIR) scanners used for waste sorting processes. This means that the containers can be identified for recycling purposes. Berry uses a special high-quality non-carbon black masterbatch with special pigments to improve NIR technology detection and sorting.
CleanStream® is Berry’s proprietary process, which identifies and separates food use items from mixed domestic collections to produce mechanically recycled, high-quality recycled polypropylene that is suitable for contact-sensitive applications. CleanStream® has been granted a Letter of No Objection (LNO) from the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA), which confirms that the post-consumer recycled (PCR) PP produced by the process can be used in levels up to 100% recycled content for food contact applications, and Berry is currently seeking EU approval.
Berry’s production facility in Leamington Spa, UK, has the capacity to recycle nearly 40% of all PP waste collected from domestic recycling bins in the UK, producing significantly lower-carbon recycled plastic at scale.
Highlights from Berry Flexibles division’s wide selection of films for food and beverage applications include its latest solutions for bags, pouches, stand-up pouches, and flow wraps. The company’s range of Entour® mono-material lamination films and its laminated pouches offer recyclable alternatives to traditional multi-material PET/PE and OPET/PE laminate films that cannot be easily recycled.
